In the 2014 U.S. Census survey, it was estimated that there were 43 million renter households, which make up about 36% of the country. The Apartment List sought to see how renters felt about their experiences within this specific market. In this study, respondents were questioned in eight key areas: overall city satisfaction, confidence in the local economy, plans for home ownership, safety and crime rate, access to recreational activities, quality of local schools, state and local taxes and quality of daily commute.
Surprisingly, Houston ranked 84th out of the 100 Best Cities for Renters, and it received an overwhelming “D” for overall city satisfaction from its survey respondents. Although renters placed high in confidence in the economy and their satisfaction for the state in local taxes, Houston renters are middle of the road in the other key areas.
Renters have concerns specifically in the areas of the quality of schools, access to recreational activities, and the safety and crime rate, as all three categories received a “C” rating. Although this survey does not speak for everyone, it was designed to be representative of the majority opinion.
