In this week’s Fort Bend News section of the Houston Chronicle, reporters explore the ever-growing school districts in Katy and Lamar. We all know that KISD has exploded in the several past years, but it has been almost equally matched by the growth in LISD.
The Principal of Foster High School in LISD, Gene Tomas, has been with the district since it started, and he has seen first-hand the growing number of students each year. Reportedly, LISD has expanded by about 1,000 students per year over the last decade, with a growth rate of 4.6%. The Katy school district is close behind at 4.3%.
With growing numbers of students, development experts recognize the need to alleviate the over-crowding elementary, junior high and high schools. Specifically in our area, Churchill Fulshear Jr. High School and Dean Leaman Junior High School are tentatively planned to serve LISD in the Fulshear area. Then, Churchill Fulshear R. High School, predicted to open in 2016, will be a major force in alleviating the Foster High School student population.
