High School Student from Fulshear Receives Johnson Space Center Residency

Our blog enjoys featuring local stories that showcase the unique, remarkable individuals that compose our Fulshear community. Originally shared from Covering Katy, a local high school student, who resides in Cross Creek Ranch, has been working with NASA engineers and scientists about a real manned spaceflight to Mars, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Brittany Taylor and her family moved to Cross Creek Ranch in Fulshear in 2014 after living in the Philippines for 13 years, and Hong Kong before that. Always having a passion for science, it was only fate that she became a part of this NASA program, designed for high school students.

As a junior at Obra D. Tompkins High School, Brittany has been selected for a six-day residency at the Johnson Space Center this July.  This prestigious recognition acknowledges her accomplishments in the Texas High School Aerospace Scholars program. To qualify for the residency, students must be U.S. citizens, Texas high school juniors, have an interest in STEM, be prepared to make a one-year relationship with NASA, and have internet and e-mail access.

During her time a Johnson Space Center this summer, Brittany will work with a team of 10-13 other students, who will be responsible to design a fully-functioning space capsule that is capable of taking people to Mars.

As for her future, Brittany said she’s considering attending the Colorado School of Mines, Rice University, or Trinity University. She said she’s considering a career in research, though she hasn’t finalized her plans.
